‘In 2010, I invited an international group of artists and thinkers to select and contribute short, written texts for this collection. My intention was to draw together a series of extracts that might be drawn upon as scores for performance. Individuals were invited to select extracts from theoretical and philosophical writing or prose and poetic works.

The impetus for the collection was Unsignal, a quartet I choreographed for dancers Marina Collard, Annie Lok, Lauren Potter and Sasha Roubicek. I was interested to employ texts as scores for performance, engaging in the physicality of ideas, to create a work imbued with a density of conflated, jostling and approximate meanings.

It is a great pleasure to share this collection and I warmly encourage others to engage with the generosity of consideration that each contributor has brought to bear on this project. I hope the ideas and propositions in this collection will inspire, stimulate and inform others in their own work.’

Joe Moran, June 2011
