Questioning Dance
Joe Moran (London)
Sat 8 & Sun 9 October 2011
Part of Decoda’s Moved series
Ellen Terry Building, Coventry
£60/ £45/ £30
Choreographer and dancer Joe Moran leads Questioning Dance, an investigative choreographic workshop arising from his renewed enthusiasm for movement and dance within choreographic practice.
In his work Joe is currently considering the apparently mutually exclusive relationship between 1) choreographic formalism and conceptually driven dance and 2) full-bodied, unmediated dancing. This workshop is intended to be a laboratory opportunity to explore these concerns. It is open to choreographers, makers and dancers with a strong interest in the creation and development of movement. Questioning Dance will investigate detailed somatic approaches to develop movement, as well as techniques to analysis, test and refine movement. It will also question how we shape and extend material through choreographic structuring.
Joe Moran (UK, 1977) is a choreographer, dancer and Artistic Director of Dance Art Foundation, a resident company at Artsadmin’s Toynbee Studios. He creates dance performance, film and installation for theatres, galleries and public spaces. His work is currently driven by a fascination with a number of choreographic propositions: choreography as a structural intervention to provide a frame for the investment of meaning in the experience of pattern, organisation, variation and repetition; choreography as perceptual directives to cohere action and presence; choreography as an embodiment of ideas and critical thought; choreography as presence and rethinking subjectivities. Joe’s new works On The Off Chance, Singular, Surveyed and The Swarm Quintet were are presented as part of Differ & Repeat, a choreographic collection of live performance, film and installation that he curated in multiple spaces across The Place (June 2011). As a dancer, Joe has worked with many distinguished choreographers including Deborah Hay, Siobhan Davies (Bank 2008) and Christopher House (Toronto Dance Theatre). Joe trained in dance and choreography at London Contemporary Dance School, following his undergraduate training in theatre at Bristol University and extensive independent study in the UK and internationally. This summer, Joe embarks upon a new dance work for men, beginning research as part of Choreodrome 2011 at The Place. http://www.youtube.com/joemorandance
