Dance Art Foundation’s New Choreography Project kicks off with Facilitating Dance to Happen, a weekend workshop with Pontus Petterrson, Swedish choreographer and dancer/performer educated in Copenhagen.

Each day, the workshop begins with an exploratory warm up class drawing influence from Gaga (Batsheva choreographer Ohad Naharin’s movement language), as well as traces from BMC, Klein technique and other somatic practices, “the class will be our point of departure, leaving us filled with thoughts and questions, charged for more movement and exploration”. The workshop will continue with methods and ideas that Pontus uses in his work, as well as making up new ones on the way during the course of the workshop. Pontus’ work is characterised by an urgent and devoted interest in the moving body and its possibilities, the love of dance and dancing, and how bodies are being shaped, allowed to move or not move, on and off stage.

I am delighted to welcome Pontus back to London having recently curated his solo performance, For Your Eyes Only, as part of Differ & Repeat at The Place. I see Pontus’ work as part of an exciting generation of international artists who are reappraising dance’s engagement in critical theory, interdisciplinary practice and cultural objects, and exploring the re-deployment of movement in contemporary choreographic practice. I hope others may be as excited as I about the ideas and questions that arise from Pontus’ maverick choreographic strategies and his dynamic physical engagement with movement - Joe Moran, Artistic Director

Pontus Petterrson is a Swedish choreographer and dancer/performer educated in Copenhagen. After his graduation in 2007, he started dancing in the Swedish production of Kamyout by Ohad Naharin (Batsheva Dance Company). Through this project, Ohad Naharin’s movement language, Gaga, became a ground for Pontus’ own physical praxis and remains an important instrument in his work. Pontus continued working as a dancer with choreographers in Scandinavia, as well as the American choreographer Deborah Hay. His own choreographies have been presented in Europe and Israel. These include the solo, For Your Eyes Only, a one-to-one performance in a two-person tent, most recently presented in London as part of Dance Art Foundation’s Differ & Repeat, a collection of live performance, film and installation occupying multiple spaces across The Place, June 2011. In 2010, he was part of Choreroam, a European programme for emerging choreographers. The programme resulted in the solo OF(F) WHITE, premiering in Copenhagen, April 2011, and is now touring. http://www.youtube.com/pjukus
