DANCE & CRITICAL THEORY GROUP

Dance & Critical Theory Group (DCTG) is a self-organising group of independent dance artists that considers critical theory in relation to contemporary dance practice. The group, convened in 2008 by dance artists Joe Moran and Florence Peake, emerged from an interest to explicitly locate artistic practice and inquires within critical frameworks and to explore critical theory and philosophical ideas in an informal, yet professional, collegial context. The group values being a space for artists’ engagement in critical discourse that is outside academia.
The structure is such that a member of the group to suggest a text/ book/ article, DVD, performance or an idea from one's practice in relation to critical theory to discuss. Therefore, one or more members self-elect to 'lead' a session and distribute reading or performance lists that other members engage with in order to discuss. The group meets monthly and the intention is that members commit for agreed periods and prioritise attending meetings.

Within this context, occasional Youtube Nights have been organised. These entail attendees coming equipped with links of their favourite online, dance related videos (performance clips, interviews, pop promos, extracts from films, talks – whatever one likes), which are shared and discussed in relation to how they interest, irritate or inspire.
